Importance of consistent branding in BYUSA

It is important to have consistent branding in BYUSA so people will be able to associate BYUSA to a particular message.  Consistent branding allows different activities and events to be associated to one organization.  It is important to use the correct branding for BYUSA so people do not get confused.  Consistency allows for repetition and reinforcement of a message and brand.  Also, with consistent branding we will be able to portray our vision of BYUSA.

Get a friend involved

I got my friend Adrianne Syme to get involved in the Activities Area.

Make BYU a Zion Community

I can personally make our BYU community a Zion community in many ways.  First, by having a positive attitude.  Attitude is everything, if you are positive than those around you are more likely to be positive as well.  Smiling is another way to do this.  It is important to walk around campus with a smile and to say hi to people that you come across.  Also, it is important to be inclusive and to not exclude people from things.  I can do this by always being welcoming to people I meet and invite them to do things.  Also, I can continue to create relationships with people in the office so we can create a Zion community in BYUSA which can then spread throughout all of BYU.  It is important for us to be examples to our fellow peers.

Contributing to the Culture of the Office

I plan to continue contributing to the culture of the office by saying hi to everyone and always smiling.  It is important for our team to be like a Zion community so our mission can spread campus wide.  One way to do this is by becoming good friends that are always there for each other. Also, whenever new people come in for tours and are looking for volunteer opportunities it is vital that we are welcoming.  It is important we show an interest in them and assist them in what they are looking for. The culture of the office is to be welcoming, inclusive, and happy.

Why do I volunteer?

I volunteer mainly because I love seeing the smiles and happy looks on other people's faces after they are served in some way.  I love helping people and making them happy.  When people feel like they belong somewhere and are cared about they tend to be happier.  Also, when we serve others we are serving the Lord.  Our whole purpose on Earth is to become more like Christ and return to our Heavenly Father.  Christ was the ultimate example of service; he would help the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the sinners.  It is important for us to serve others so we can feel the spirit of charity which is the pure love of Christ.  When I first started at BYU I just felt that something was missing; I was spending too much time just thinking and doing stuff for myself, I wasn't helping anyone.  I decided I wanted to make a difference on campus and serve those around me, that is when I found BYUSA.

My own finances

The BYUSA financial process will assist me in my own finances by helping me to really think  before I make a purchase.  This process will also help me to keep track of my money and to make sure to save it for future purchases.  Additionally, this will help me to really think if something is important enough to purchase before just buying  it.  It is vital to keep track of all of your expenses so you will be able to pay bills, make payments, and support your family.

Finances Training

I will make sure that each new person in my area is trained and held accountable for the financial process by making sure they get certified.  Certification will help them understand the BYUSA financial protocol.  Additionally, I will stress the importance of following the rules. Also, Administration has told us that each new person that comes into the office needs to get checked in with them in order to be put in the system.  Additionally, admin is training the volunteers and helping them to get certified.  Although, Admin is doing this, it is important that I be proactive in assisting my volunteers to get certified.

Protocol

Organizations use protocol to stay organized and on top of things in order to run successfully.  It is because of protocol that organizations are able to run smoothly for such long periods of time.  A great example of this is the Church.  There are certain rules and regulations on how things work within the Church which helps it to run across the world.  For example, how the bishopric is set up is the same in every ward around the world.  Additionally, we have protocol for all of the finances in the office.  If we didn't have these rules and procedures everything would be extremely chaotic.

Professionalism

Professionalism creates credibility for numerous reasons. First, it establishes a sense of trust between you and those around you.  Professionalism allows you to be punctual, credible, confident, respectful, and knowledgeable.  It's said that "you only have one chance to make a great first impression."  I believe this to be true.  If you show up to a job interview in shorts and a t-shirt, you will not impress the company.  If you show up in a business suit, they will most likely take you seriously.  It is important that we maintain a sense of professionalism when we are dealing with outside vendors, administration, and different entities on campus.  By being respectful and on time to things we will establish a professional relationship with those around us. Also, by communicating with our team members around us we will be successful in our endeavors and it displays a sense of professionalism.

Knowing the Heart

Knowing a person's name is completely different than knowing their heart.  This term I have been able to truly know the hearts of those that I work with.  I didn't know Devin before I accepted the position as his Executive Director.  But after getting to know him I truly know that he loves those around him and loves to serve.  He is more than just a leader, he is a leader that loves everyone.  Love is the drive behind every choice of his and it is important that I learn from him.

LOVE and SERVICE

5. My motive for service is the look on the person’s face after you have served them in some way.  Additionally, our whole goal here on Earth is to become more like Christ and one way to do that is through service.  Love is the driving force of service for me.  If you love those that you serve, you will be able to make an even larger impact on their lives.  Serving without love is pointless; if you serve for the wrong reasons it isn’t really service.  In our area we talked about our goals for the year, service was the center of all of them.

RACE

4. I plan to use RACE this year in helping Clubs with their advertising and especially for Care Week.  Care Week is a major activity to plan and RACE will help me to stay organized and on top of things.  Also, RACE helps to space the process of planning and implementing a plan out, so it is easier to manage.  Using RACE for Care Week will help me organize who will be my Program Directors, figuring out what all is needed before actually ordering it, and will help me to organize advertising for it.
